Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s Launches June 21

0

The annual Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s bicycle tour will head to New Mexico. I will fly out June 21 with my bicycle to Albuquerque, head northwest to Shiprock and then pedal home. I’m calling it ‘vacation.’

Once again, a huge thanks to Tim Schmidt and USCCA for stepping forward as the primary sponsor of the tour. “I believe in you, Judy, and I believe what you’re riding for is so important,” Schmidt said.

The Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s hopes to clear $100,000 this year. All donations stay local and help support music and exercise activities at Cedar Community in West Bend.   ~Judy

3 Dementia Bills Get Governor’s Signature in Wisconsin

This happened in Wisconsin today:

From The Wheeler Report:

Today, State Representative Mike Rohrkaste (R-Neenah) and the rest of the Speaker’s Task Force on Alzheimer’s and Dementia had three significant bills from the Wisconsin Cares Legislative Package signed into law by Governor Walker. Each bill will directly help those living with dementia and their caregivers.

Great Minds Gala a Success

 (Me with Dr. Sandy Halperin)

Wonderful evening at the Great Minds Gala presented by Integrace and LeadingAge. The event was held Monday evening at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington D.C.

I was presented with the Exceptional Friend or Family Caregiver Award for my bicycling tours to raise money and awareness for memory care activities at Cedar Community. A huge thanks to Tracey Stroeh for the nomination.

I was able to meet with Dr. Alexander “Sandy” Halperin (see photo above) – the winner of the Senator William and Ellen Proxmire Award. You can view Sandy’s Story by clicking HERE; it’s well worth your time to view it. An Excellence in Dementia Care Award was presented to Phoebe Ministries that evening, as well.

The evening was fantastic, like an Academy Award show.

There was opening entertainment from the Saint Augustine Gospel Choir (click on the link to hear their performance) followed by presentations, videos and a dinner of filet mignon, roasted tomato bordelaise, pan-seared dayboat scallops, and lemon pepper coulis with broccolini and julienne vegetables.

All of this was followed by a sweet trio dessert consisting of a black & white mousse square, strawberry swirl cheesecake and a chocolate cherry tart.

Some tidbits from behind the scenes:

-During rehearsal the event coordinator, Sharon Sullivan, kept mentioning ‘the band.’  “You’ll take the stage after ‘the band,'” she said. I knew this was a high-end event so, being the reporter I had to ask. “Is One Direction going to be here tonight?”  “How about the Fu Fighters… are the Fu Fighters the band you’re referring to?” There was quite a bit of secrecy surrounding the evening and I was approaching it like a Nancy Drew mystery with a Rolling Stone twist.

-We were given the option of putting our acceptance speech on a teleprompter. I passed on the offer and figured I’d wing it.  I did awesome! …. everybody said so.

IMG_5917-Some scuttlebutt at the ceremony indicated the award winners this year would be presenters at NEXT year’s Gala.  WOOT WOOT!  Another return trip to D.C. spending time with others who are passionate about Alzheimer’s and dementia care progress and cure!

-I totally pulled a R. Douglas Ziegler and approached as many people as possible to see if they would sponsor this year’s Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s bicycle tour. I asked permission from the organizers and the reps from Cedar Community – just to make sure I wasn’t out of line. Hopefully I’ll have great success and kick the fundraiser past the six-figure mark this year!

-The award is crystal and it’s going to be on display at Cedar Ridge upon my return.

-I did have some concerns about the lighting on stage… especially if you could see through my dress. I felt very Beyonce….  but I figured I was in Washington D.C. and this was not even close to D.C. scandal.

-A final thank you to LeadingAge and Integrace for the honor of being a distinguished guest and a part of the exciting event that brings us together on behalf of those who suffer from dementia.

Melanie’s 1970’s song Brand New Key – with a Steffes twist

Bright idea, bad placement

Such a good idea in the Milan, Italy, airport. Too bad they put it right at the gate, AFTER people might have spent at Duty Free or cashed in their Euro already. Just an FYI if you plan on traveling international…

Thank you to my Italian Host Family!

Host family, Claudia and Mario

A wonderful meal with my host family, Claudia and Mario (pictured above), and their son Lorenzo. They totally adopted and spoiled me in my last three days in Italy.

Claudia took me out one evening to a festival with Italian music, food and culture. She went out of her way to plunge me into the local art scene and she helped me make a very spiritual pilgrimage within 24 hours of flying home.

Wonderful new friends are a perfect way to put a “bow” on a fabulous tour!

PHOTO GALLERY: Final Days in Italy – Exploring the Spiritual Mountainside

PHOTO GALLERY:
On my final day of touring I’m exploring the Sacred Mountain of Varese (Sacro Monte di Varese).

It’s a very spiritual place that features a pilgrimage of castles and statues that depict the life of Jesus Christ and ends with a black Madonna in the Saint Mary Sanctuary of Monte Varese.

The cobblestone walkway led to 13 buildings that featured life-sized statues depicting the life of Christ.

Random reminiscing

Here’s a compilation of some of the things I experienced in Varese while out geocaching for a bike box…..

I found an outdoor velodrome.

The velodrome looked to be a 250-meter track. I managed to work my way inside and onto the track. It had very high banks and I could not even reach a solid speed to stay up in the straightaways, as those have a bit of a pitch, too.

There are wonderful color posters for some of the art exhibits on display.

I went back to a local park where the manicured bushes were two stories high and mazes were cut into the trees.
