The BiKeWriTer | Riding the old railroad in Pinellas County

0
February 16, 2022 – Pinellas Co., FL – Pinellas County has a beautiful bicycle trail running through the Gulf Coast of Florida.

pinellas

A former railroad line from St. Petersburg north to US Alt 19 has been transformed into a popular destination spot linking the artistic communities of Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor, the fabulous Dunedin, and Clearwater.

Tarpon Springs is a Greek community set on the shores of the sponge docks in Pinellas County. Hellas Bakery is the main attraction.

There’s a line to get into the place and a line to try and wiggle your way out.

Beautiful glass cases show off trays of sugary Greek pastries.

I opted for the coconut macaroon drizzled in chocolate. It was heaven. A rich hearty coconut cookie that offered plenty of chewy goodness.

Dunedin, FL is by far the best community on earth. Art surrounded by bike trails, history, craft breweries and a wee bit of Scottish flair. Need I say more?

The Dunedin History Museum is in an old train depot that sits alongside the bike trail. Art work out front captures a conductor bellowing a final call as a mother and child race to catch the train.

Inside are well-documented displays of the growth, change, and challenges incorporated into the fabric of Dunedin.

From the prosperous orange harvests to the one-two punch of frigid temps that wrecked farmer’s futures, to the injection of investment dollars and art that brought a community back to life.

The museum also well documents the division of an era when the depot itself was divided by black and white.

Further down the bike path is Kafe Racer, a combination bike shop and coffee house.

Anything you need from a WiFi hookup to a beer or hot beverage… oh, and there are bikes. Lots of bikes… and handy mechanics and history.

Honeymoon Island State Park was an unexpected treat. Located over the Causeway and to the west of Dunedin, the barrier island offers white, sandy beach dunes and wildlife from osprey to great horned owls to diamondback rattlesnakes.

The Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s along the Gulf Coast has been a genuine treat.

Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s | Campground math is puzzling

0
Florida, bear
February 15, 2022 – Homosassas, FL – Pedaled north to Homosassas and while looking for a place for the evening set out to find 7 Sisters Campground.

campground

In my mind, it sounded charming. Seven sisters working together to start a campground on property that had been in their family for generations. Grassy lots, a boutique coffee shop, warm fires at night and the camaraderie of the sisters and all the stories they could tell.

Weaving down a back country road I followed the signs and pulled into not what I had imagined at all.

A sign that read “office” hung on the side of a rustic trailer. It had a wooden porch next to open water that looked rather murky… and that’s being kind.

I had my mind made up already but a voice from inside bellowed “hello” and I went in to, at the very least, get the lowdown on how the 7 Sisters must have escaped.

The trailer was mostly barren, except for a beer sign, a big desk, and a large man with deep black eyeliner sitting behind a computer screen.

“Seven sisters?,” I asked quizzically. The man nodded.

“Where are they?”

”It’s just me and Roy,” said the young man. I will call him Kevin because he said his name and I, obviously disenchanted, wasn’t listening.

Kevin reminded me of Adam Lambert; season 8 of American Idol. He was charming enough, friendly and, aside from the computer and the desk he was sucking on a vape pipe. He would take a drag during our conversation and then place it, not on his expansive wooden desk nor in his shirt pocket, but his legs were crossed and he rested the pipe in the crotch atop his blue jeans.

It was odd but real, and now I can’t unsee it.

“I read that you had cabins,” I said. “How much?”

”Well,” said Kevin, dancing the mouse around the desk and trying to place the cursor in the grid on his screen, “Let me see if we have any left.”

Camping on a random Wednesday in February is apparently a hot market in the tourist metropolis of Homosassas.

Florida, bears,

“We might have one… if the girl can turn it over,” he said.
“How much,” I asked.
“It’s $100 for the night.” Said Kevin. “With a $100 cleaning fee.”
”So $200 for the night,” I confirmed.

”Nope,” said Kevin taking a hit off his vape pen and returning it gently to its holder, “It’s $100… and then $100 for the cleaning fee.”

Silent pause… as I let it sink in.

“I know it SOUNDS like $200,” said Kevin. “But someone’s gotta pay the cleaning lady.”

I started to wonder if Kevin was talking about himself in the third person and that HE was really the cleaning lady.

I kicked around and toed at a dark spot on the floor. “You’re right… it sure DOES sound like $200,” I said.

Figuring I didn’t go to school in Florida and I never took campsite math I told Kevin it was a little steep for me and I’d push along and explore my options.

He was pretty unphased and went back to looking at his computer screen and noshing on his vape pen.

And the dreamy Seven Sister Campground would live on only in Wisconsin biker lore and my crushed imagination.

“Have I not commanded you? …  Be strong and courageous. … Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:9

The BiKeWriTer | Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s – Tracking down old friends

0
February 14, 2022 – Hernando Beach, FL – Managed to track down a couple of West Bend’s finest, friends to many, now living in Hernando Beach, Florida.

friends

Gunter and Barb Woog were West Bend famous for their love of Lithia Beer history, a craft beer fire truck and Barb made her mark as a popular English teacher at Slinger High School; she was part of the local theatre scene, as well.

They have a lovely home; much downsized from the estate on Silver Lake but spacious and well landscaped by Gunter.

My room was easy to find. It was the one labeled Princess Judy’s Chambers.

Barb and Gunter Woog

My time spent with friends was great and the open-door policy at the Woog’s is much appreciated.

Ruth once pitched a combined no-hitter without retiring a single batter.

On June 23, 1917, Ruth took the mound against the Washington Senators and walked the leadoff hitter, Ray Morgan. Ruth argued balls and strikes with home plate umpire Brick Owens so vociferously that he was ejected from the game. Ruth rushed Owens and threw a punch that struck the back of the umpire’s neck. Morgan was then thrown out trying to steal second base, and Ruth’s replacement, Ernie Shore, retired the next 26 batters in order. Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s – Finding mermaids in FL

0

Weeki Wachee, FL – There are signs of pirates in Florida and talk of mermaids. Pedaling into the community of Weeki Wachee you’ll find it has flair similar to the Wisconsin Dells with unique dinosaur art followed by a chaser of mermaids.
mermaids

The underwater show at Weeki Wachee is Disneyesque with a voiceover script lip-synced by underwater actors in bikini tops, mermaid tails, and what looks like a hookah pipe. (It is the oxygen resource.)

https://youtube.com/watch?v=5uHmi_uUtIk%3Fversion%3D3%26rel%3D1%26showsearch%3D0%26showinfo%3D1%26iv_load_policy%3D1%26fs%3D1%26hl%3Den%26autohide%3D2%26wmode%3Dtransparent

The entire show is performed underwater, except for a brief stint on stage once the mermaid’s wish for legs is granted so she can have a dance with the handsome prince.

The mermaids spin and wave as real fish swim in front of the audience watching the show through the giant aquarium glass.

Reminded me of this Disney quote by Sebastian in The Little Mermaid, “Down here all the fish is happy. As off to the waves they roll. The fish on the land ain’t happy. They sad ’cause they in the bowl.”

Best Service, 5 corners

After the performance, the mermaids arrive on land to meet guests and pose for pictures. During a lull in kid traffic, I had an in-depth interview with a mermaid who hails from New York.

“It’s always been my dream to be a Weeki Wachee mermaid,” said Nikki.

It is her third year in the performance. “Once I get this acting bug satisfied I will probably pursue some sort of scuba diving/tourism field,” she said.

Down to hardtacks. “Who is dating the prince?”

Nikki said there are budding relationships. Over the past 60 years, one pair of performers got married and now their daughter is in the show.

”Other performers also come back,” she said. “Retired mermaids are called sirens. They’re such a large group they have reunions.”

The fitness level of the mermaids is Olympic in nature. “You need really good core and arm strength, “ said Nikki.

Weights are not used to keep actors underwater. And the water comes from a fresh spring with a temp of about 72 degrees.
After posing for a rare actual photo with a mermaid I moved along to explore the park, but… spun around for one last question and heard a dramatic thump like a wet log falling on a hardwood floor.

Cedar Community

The mermaid’s shift above land was over and she was off her chair and back to the water. I’m sure they’re instructed not to ruin the mermaid mystique so in typical Darryl Hannah fashion Nikki had clunked to the ground and was crawling back to the dressing room.

Because I had to ask… “yes” there is currently a mermaid from Wisconsin. But neither of the two out of water could pronounce where she was from.

Ruth was not a unanimous choice for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

A year after his retirement, Ruth was among the five initial inductees elected to the new National Baseball Hall of Fame under construction in Cooperstown, New York. In spite of Ruth’s amazing career statistics, 11 of the 226 voters left him off their ballots, and the “Sultan of Swat” trailed Ty Cobb as the leading vote-getter. Ruth’s plaque in Cooperstown refers to him as baseball’s “greatest drawing card.” Klein, C., (2014, July 11) 10 Surprising Facts You May Not Know About Babe Ruth history.com https://www.history.com/news/10-things-you-may-not-know-about-babe-ruth

VIDEO | The charm of a quiet fishing village in Aripeka, Florida

0
Arapika, FL
February 12, 2022 – Aripeka, FL – A Day full of historic adventure and mermaid surprises while pedaling through Florida on the Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s.

Mullet fishing has been a part of the region as far back as the Calusa Indians settlements.
Iconic stilt houses were built as fish camps to store the catch. Boats were emptied quickly to ensure a prompt return to fishing.
The stilt houses stand today as reminders of the once thriving Mullet fishing industry
Some fun facts:
During World War II, Florida provided over 55,000,000 pounds of mullet needed as part of the food supply.
Troops overseas received mullet packed in salt to preserve the meat.
The salt springs of Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park are believed to have produced salt during the Civil War era, also supplying meat to the troops.
The gulf coast of Florida has been responsible for close to 88.2% of the nation’s mullet harvest since at least the 1960s.
Some of the harvests was from the shores of Port Richey as commercial mullet fishing was a very popular industry locally.
Florida voters approve the constitutional amendment in 1994 banning the use of certain gillnets commonly used in Mullet fishing which forced the industry to adapt to new gear or abandon net fishing for mullet.
The boat is an actual restored mullet skiff.
These large flat-bottom boats with a motor mounted near the front provided a large deck space in the rear and could easily skim across shallow waters often only 6 to 8 inches deep
The skiffs were often called bird dogs or well boats referring to the method of fishing where the captain would spot schools of mullet and then rapidly Circle them while an assistant fed hundred yards of net before hauling in the catch

mermaids Aripeka, Florida is a throwback to a simpler time of clothesline conversations, church on Sunday and family picnics.

The sleepy fishing community featured visits by boxer Jack Dempsey and Babe Ruth who would cast a line in the off season.

Originally located in Hernando County, the post office was moved across Hammock Creek into Pasco County in 1921. It was designated an historic site by the Pasco County historical Preservation Committee on June 3, 1993.

Several families settled in 1886, establishing the community known as Aripeka.

According to a state marker the community “was named for the Aripeka Sawmills Corporation which had adopted the name of an early 19th century Seminole leader.”

Exited the main highway and found a gem of a par all road headed north, the Old Dixie Highway.

Ruth first gained fame as a pitcher.

Although best remembered for swatting a prodigious 714 home runs and slugging .690, which remains a major-league record, Babe Ruth was one of baseball’s most dominant left-handed pitchers in the 1910s. He won 89 games in six seasons with the Boston Red Sox, including 24 in 1917, and helped the team win three World Series titles. Ruth only pitched five games for the New York Yankees as his position switched to outfielder after being sold by Boston before the 1920 season. VIDEO | TheBikeWriter | Quick bike tour in Tampa, Florida

0
February 10, 2022 – Tampa, FL – I’m heading into a quick jaunt on the bike in Tampa, Florida the next few days.

florida

I’m chasing down a couple of stories, including some history, on baseball legend Babe Ruth and trying to find a woman who has performed as a mermaid the past six decades; the word is she even swam for Elvis.

Algernon at the Marriott Hotel saved the day. Landed Tuesday night and found Tampa International is the only airport without large-item storage.  Got the police involved with no luck and then dragged the bike box to the Marriott next door and Algernon said he would tuck it away for me until I leave.

– Initially, I thought Algernon’s name was Al and it was a Godwink that my Dad was following me on the trip.

– The name reminded me of the story Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.

– Spent the night at Tampa International; it was very Tom Hanks and “The Terminal.” FYI – the maintenance guys know the quietest nooks to curl up and sleep.

Pedaling out of the airport the next day I consulted an officer about a side road. He was gruff. “You didn’t plan did you?” I said, “That takes all the adventure out.”

Finding the service road to pedal out of Tampa International

What’s the weather in Wisconsin? Same here… or thereabout. Let’s just say I’m wearing earmuffs and blue jeans while biking and I found a glove on the road and I’m wearing it.

Upper Suncoast Bike Trail runs north out of the Tampa area and parallel to Hwy 589.

The path is paved and to the left are beautiful estates, and Starkey Park and Moon Lake Park.

A random armadillo sniffing around the dirt along the Suncoast bike trail

Very cute Twistee Treat in Bayonet Point. Owners have had it for 29 years. The Lady ahead of me in line ordered a hot chocolate because it was so cold. Temp was 61 degrees.

I logged about 50 miles from Tampa to Bayonet Point. Camped at Warren Boyce State  Park. I’ll use “camp” loosely. Google said there was camping. Come to find out, Google is wrong and the park rangers have tried to change it but they’ve had no luck.

in a conversation with the ranger, they said the closest camping park was a 20-minute drive. So about 28 miles in biking terms.

I tried a church on the way into town. The pastor declined a request to camp in their back 40. “We’re surrounded by woods,” he said. “The homeless come out at night and we’ve had a lot of security issues.”

The park ranger confirmed Bayonet Point was frequently featured on the TV show Cops.

The ranger agreed to a Plan B and I was grateful for another option.

This was my view last night.

I’ve been intrigued lately by YouTube videos on winter camping; it looks exciting. When temps dropped just below 40 last night I found it wasn’t.

My quarters at the State Park.

It’s actually an observation deck and public restrooms. Pretty upscale. It’s no wonder I travel alone.

Sunrise this morning from the observation deck, just outside my bathroom suite. Awesome!

Moving on to find Babe Ruth’s fishing village and the famous mermaids.

Ruth believed he was a year older than he really was for most of his life.

“For decades Ruth believed that his birthday was February 7, 1894. However, when he applied for a passport before sailing to Japan with an all-star team of ballplayers after the 1934 season, he looked up his birth certificate and found his birthday listed as February 6, 1895, nearly a full year later than he had believed. Ruth, however, continued to celebrate February 7 as his birthday and did not shave a year off his age.” Klein, C., (2014, July 11) 10 Surprising Facts You May Not Know About Babe Ruth history.com https://www.history.com/news/10-things-you-may-not-know-about-babe-ruth

The Cedar Lakes Segment is extremely inviting. The terrain is pretty flat with some moderate climbing after you get through the farmer’s field. The trees in the forest area appear to be out of Disney’s Snow White with leering faces and branches that resemble outstretched arms. In the distance is the sound of the highway and the mournful whistle of one of dozen or so trains that run daily through the Slinger/Allenton area.
