Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s: Rickshaw bike for Samaritan Campus, or no?

0

July 16, 2018 – Washington County, WI – On June 28, 2018, Judy Steffes, longtime West Bend resident and editor of the Washington County Insider set out on her annual bicycle trek to raise funds for a cause that is near and dear to her heart – Alzheimer’s.

Steffes’s dad, Al Steffes, has been suffering from Alzheimer’s for some time now and she has witnessed firsthand how this life-changing disease not only affects the one who is stricken with it, but the families and caregivers as well. She started off her trip in Wisconsin and traveled through Upper Michigan, a portion of Canada, then back down through lower Michigan, taking the ferry back across Lake Michigan and then cycling home from Manitowoc.

This year Steffes’s goal was to raise $10,000 for a rickshaw bike (see photo below) for the residents at Samaritan Campus, 531 E. Washington St., West Bend. Unfortunately, due to a death in the family (a 30-year-old cousin passed away unexpectedly), Steffes had to cut her trip short by a few days.

At this time, Steffes has reached $6,000 of the $10,000 but is convinced the Washington County community and local businesses will find value in the presentation of a rickshaw bike to the local Samaritan Campus which will lend freedom and independence with the help of a bike “pilot” to those who are currently unable to ambulate or enjoy the ride outdoors. Rickshaw bikes have become increasingly popular as they provide avenues for creating friendships between the senior rider and his/her pilot, bringing about the joy of childhood memories and creating an environment that promotes healthy conversation.

If you’d like to help complete Steffes reach the final goal, even a small donation is helpful. Steffes states, “In my community, a simple goal of $4000 is extremely reachable and I believe we will hit the mark by Friday.”

Steffes was due to return this Thursday, July 19. Instead, she will be assisting family members for the upcoming funeral of her cousin.

Checks may be made out to “Samaritan Campus” and mailed to 531 E. Washington St., West Bend, WI 53095. Please place in MEMO: Judy’s Bike Tour. All donations are tax deductible, 501c3. FEIN: 396005754

Amazing Ride turns into Amazing Race

July 14, 2018 – Traverse City, MI – I received word late last night that a young cousin of mine has died.

We’re going to shift the tour a bit to a Plan B so I can get home to tie up loose ends and attend the service with my parents.

I’m leaving early today to log about 95 miles from Traverse City, MI to Ludington where I will catch the evening USS Badger, cross the lake to Manitowoc and then Sunday morning scoot about 70 miles into West Bend.

Who’s with me?

I do need to raise a bit more money for the Samaritan Campus.

I’m going to put up $100 each day as I challenge myself to get home in two days. I’d love for you to jump on board. Feel free to take a look at the tax-deductible donation details at the end of the article.

A note of thanks

A big shoutout to George from McLane bike shop in Traverse City for getting me back on the road again on Friday.

It was Friday the 13 and just outside Charlevoix my cable broke and I lost all my rear gears.

Basically that means my 21-speed turned into a 3-speed. I could keep moving forward, which was a good thing, but the hills were a bit of a challenge.

Anyway George made me a priority and showed me how to fix it if it would happen again. The next time I’d have to pack a couple more things… including George, in my back pocket.

Photos from the road

Absolutely loved the bike art in Charlevoix, MI.

This little gal selling lemonade just made my day. Her siblings had left her to supervise the store while they went out and posted signs.

She made more money while they were gone than they made the whole day and she’s only two. What a future.

Please consider making a donation to the Samaritan Campus as this year’s Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s pedals to secure seniors at the facility a rickshaw so they can enjoy bicycling too.

Thanks to to all the sponsors including Horicon Bank, Pizza Ranch, Gruber Tool & Die, The Sign Shop, Alliance Services, American Services Real Estate.

Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s – A day in pictures

July 13, 2018 – I was adopted in Harbor Springs, MI, by the wonderful Nancy Cook.

She just came into the public library to renew a book and ended up taking us both home.

Nancy was widowed several years ago after her husband Bob passed away following a battle with Parkinson’s. She said her eight kids, grandkids and great grandchildren keep her busy.

“I took myself out for a little picnic supper tonight,” said Nancy. “I even bought a small glass of wine.”

An avid traveler, Nancy loves adventure and downhill skiing. Years ago she and Bob went everywhere in their Fifth Wheel camper, traveling to Seattle and California; they even toured Alaska and Rome.

“I even took my turn behind the wheel,” said Nancy, a diminutive woman of 5’4″ with spunk, “I tell you I thought some pretty blue words trying to maneuver some turns in that thing.”

We became fast friends, exchanging stories of adventure and mishaps.

“Oh, glory,” said Nancy; her favorite expression when listening to my 26-days-without-luggage-tour in New Zealand.

In the morning Nancy fixed a lovely breakfast of yogurt, fresh berries, whole grain toast, rich coffee, and “a hard boiled brown egg for protein.” We ate amongst the chicken/rooster decor in her charming kitchen.

The neighbor’s dog came over to visit and Nancy prayed it wouldn’t water her flowers. She hurried to the screen door. “Time to go home now, Skip. Think you should go home now.” It was like being yelled at by Mary Poppins.

Nancy was just so genuinely nice and warm hearted, even when she was shoo-ing the dog out of her yard.

Exploring the History of Harbor Springs

The Harbor Springs Historical Society is a fun step back in time with photos detailing everything from the Native Americans to the industry surrounding the Shay locomotive and its impact on the timber industry.

Also well documented is the automobile and how it changed the tourism industry along the shoreline.

Harbor Springs also had a committed retail industry.

Rose Rosenthal was a fixture at her Main Street clothing store for 60 years.

Rose started in Business with her husband Phil in 1923. She was not only known for her ability to make the sale but also for passing out homemade fudge to her customers.

The Mayberry atmosphere of Harbor Springs hasn’t changed and the homes along the shoreline are elegant with their wraparound portches highlighted by red, white and blue bunting.

Little Traverse Wheelway

Found a gem of a paved bike trail from Harbor Springs 23.4 miles south to Charlevoix, MI.

The Wheelways runs adjacent to Little Traverse Bay and mostly along M-119.

The path is well marked and scenic. I stumbled upon Beards Brewery in downtown Petosky and purchased a couple 12-ounce Grizzly Adams IPAs for after the ride.

Just down the road was the St. Francis Solanus Indian Mission built in 1859 by Bishop Frederic Baraga.

During a renovation of the church in 2005 there were 60 graves found around the church.

Many of the graves were marked with white crosses. Mass is still held on Sunday at the church.

Just before reaching my destination of Charlevoix, there was this adorable little cherry stand.

$5 a pint…. and, yes, I paid the man.

Wrapped up the day on almost a mile-long boardwalk as I rolled into Charlevoix.

A note of thanks to Community Reform Church in Charlevoix for providing a safe space to stay.
