VIDEO | Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s – Bicycling Illinois; a quarter’s-worth of entertainment

0
August 12, 2021 –  Morris, WI – Lots of green farmland to pedal in Illinois. Below is a brief video of some of the sights from the road.

Wednesday was one of the most challenging days with high wind and rain followed by some steamy flats.

Someone asked, “What do you do in storms?”  The simple answer is “seek shelter.”

I was just north of safety in Forrest, IL when the winds really kicked up and the skies were dark but not ominous.

I could feel a little rain and turned into a trucking business about a half-block off the road. I pulled under the overhang just as the skies opened and Mother Nature let go with rain and lightning.

What to do but enjoy the break, hydrate and get some postcard homework completed.

That was the easy version. Getting antsy and thinking the storms were over I ventured back on the road.

Hwy 47 is a busy road with 55 mph truck traffic so I went a half-mile west to take an old farming highway. About three miles in the wind really pushed me sideways and the second round of storms was coming through.

In the middle of nowhere, I started pedaling back to the nearest home and hid under the front porch. I pulled on a jacket and poncho. The rain quickly subsided but the wind did not.

I ventured on. The poncho acted as a sail. I was noticed by traffic, which was a good thing but the wind grabbed the big sheets of the poncho and it worked to push me literally off the road and into the ditch.

The first dozen times were a little funny; the next 502 not so much.

I packed the jacket and poncho and soldiered on. Gripping tight on the handlebars and trying to hold upright, the strong crosswinds were winning, and maintaining my direction was like trying to steer a kite.

It.was.exhausting.

Made it to the small town of Dwight, IL by 2 p.m. It had taken nearly seven hours to go 52 miles. Good grief.

But now the sun was out and the winds had died and moving north was a bit more enjoyable. As you can see below, Illinois roads are always an adventure.

Illinois

On a side note – found this piece of history at a travel oasis just outside I80 in Morris, Illinois. It was a quarter to make it go.

August, 2021 –  Memphis, TN – You could hear the drumming echoing down the street from about six blocks away as I made my way back to the youth hostel in Memphis after a quick spin down Beale Street.

I knew I was getting close when I hit Bellevue Avenue/Vinton Street and Bellevue Middle School.  The following video picks it up from there:

One quick thought as I pedaled round to the front of the school… Are you seeing what I’m seeing? Are cement owls along the roofline the only thing missing?

Chime in with your thoughts

Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s – 30+ years of bike touring; still making new friends

0
August 11, 2021 –  Gibson City, IL – Even after touring more than 30 years on a bike it is still amazing how many people reach out to help.

After a steamy day Tuesday with temps in the high 90s I pulled into Gibson City, IL with nearly 80 miles under my belt.

Standing outside a local church on Main Street a man pulls up. “Where have you been and where are you going,” asked Paul. We chatted a bit.

Paul was a fellow biker, retired, and said I should come and stay with him tonight.

He checked with his wife, at my insistence, and I spent a lovely evening getting to know Paul and Sarah Sarantakos.

Paul was retired law enforcement and Sarah worked closely with the local Catholic Church.

“My birthday is in two days and Paul already surprised me with a leaf blower for the yard,” said Sarah. “I love outdoor power tools.”

The couple met in college and had been married for over 30 years. They had two sons, both grown and out of the house.

Paul was an avid biker and Sarah was not. “I don’t mind going up and down the block,” she said.

Paul said she would do best operating the sag wagon. Sarah eagerly agreed.

A wonderful meal of pasta and salad and an elegy bedroom in their beautiful historic home that dated to the late 1800s.

Makes this tour all the more special.

Earlier in the day in Sullivan, IL, Steve and Richard offered me some solid biking directions at the Red Apple Restaurant.

The kindness of strangers continues to impress me.

VIDEO | Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s 2021 is Riding in Tribute to Al Steffes

August, 2021 – “The Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s 2021 is riding in tribute to my dad,” Al Steffes,” said Judy Steffes.

“My dad is the one who got me started riding bikes,” said Steffes. “I remember we would go out on the tandem on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and ride around to the parks collecting aluminum cans so I could recycle them for money. He also built a basket on my bike for my paper routes and he was always there to change a flat, fix a fork or straighten handlebars.”

Have I not commanded you? … Be strong and courageous. … Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:9

Amazing Ride for Alzheimer’s | The charm of small towns

0
August 10, 2021 –  Sullivan, IL – Today marks 2 weeks on the road; Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Illinois. Hitting a lot of small towns along the way.

Below are a couple of cozy small town photos – love finding things like this on tour.

PS – 85 miles Monday from Salem to Sullivan, IL.

towns

The Supermarket was on Main Street in the Altamont, IL area. I loved the fact the sign read, “Fast friendly service all the way to your car.”

And it was true. The store manager came out and offered me a cold drink and the he handed me a copy of the local paper. The headline read, “Kinley Will crowned 2021 JR. Miss Effingham County Fair.”

An orange butterfly decided to take a break on my front handlebar bag as I also took a break in front of a pop-up vegetable stand. The hard work and trust (note cash register) has always struck me as simply adorable.
It looks like JoAnn Fabrics is still alive along with Long John Silver.
Monday was full of stop and go because of high humidity and scattered storms. I was about 12 miles north of Salem, IL and strong rain caught me so I pulled into a desolate, muddy gravel drive and hit under some trees.
A red pickup truck followed me under the branches and it was a bit odd. “If you like the fire station is just up the road and the door is open. Just pull in there to get out of the rain and dry off.”
It was Carson, a local volunteer firefighter. As the rain tapered off I spun up the road about a quarter mile. Sure enough the door was open and I wheeled my rig in.
“I think you met my dad in Mississippi,” said Carson. “He showed me you page on social media and I thought you looked familiar.”
Small town charm.

Have I not commanded you? …  Be strong and courageous. … Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”  Joshua 1:9

Knocking down the 100-mile challenge

0

August 9, 2021 – Salem, IL – Logged 100 miles and some change on Sunday, August 8. It started as a challenge ride to raise $100 for 100 miles with matching donations on my behalf and then it turned into an Amazing Race at the end as I was crossing paths with a strong line of severe storms.

challenge

This was the first rain during the entire tour.
The 100 miles was from Goreville, IL to Salem, IL.  I did head out of Selma for the final 12 mi with my eye on Vandalia, IL but Mother Nature was barreling at me at 50 mph and I was racing her at 14 mph and it was easy to see the outcome would not be in my favor.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the tour. Your money stays local to do good in the community.

If you’d still like to take part in the $100 challenge, the donation information is below. (Any amount is accepted.)

Day after 100 mi: Finished strong and woke up a bit sore and fatigued. Back-to-back 100-mile days would be pretty challenging.

On a positive note, my new hip from May 2020 held up great. This was our first century together and I think I’ll keep her.

VIDEO | I was feeling a little bit jumpy as I took the first bite

0
August 7, 2021 –  Bardwell, KY – Crossed from Tennessee into Kentucky around 9:15 a.m. on Friday.

Stopped for dinner. I can’t say it was love at first bite. (see video below)

Aaah…Kentucky. Rolling hills, beautiful green scenery, and dog chases. Never just one; always 3 coming after you at one time.

Between hill climbs and dog sprints, I sure did earn my groceries today. So I explored my options after 45 miles of road and the 51 Grill in Bardwell caught my attention.

bite

Three frogs. Six legs total. Lightly breaded. Not too salty. Lot more meat than I expected. White meat; a little stringy at times. Not fishy. Yes… like you expected… tastes like chicken.

The peach dumpling pie was homemade. It was warm in the bowl and perfect with a cold scoop of vanilla ice cream. Simply the best. Lots of sugar.

I could have had a peach dumpling chaser but instead treated my new friend Carolyn to a slice. She was 84 and playing solitaire on a tablet by herself at a table in the corner.

I asked if I could join her and she eagerly said yes. Carolyn was black and blue above her left eye. “Broke my glasses when I fell,” she said, pointing to the missing arm on the left side.

Carolyn was retired from working at the local ambulance company. She said her daughter was a nurse. She was working when Elvis died. “They closed all the other doors on that floor when they brought him in,” she said.

For such a tiny woman Carolyn had an unanticipated 32-ounce styrofoam glass of tea sitting on the table to her right. The glass almost dwarfed her… until her Friday fish Fry was served and then she peered out front behind that.

Carolyn watched me eat the somewhat greasy frog’s legs, dipping them in ranch dressing. “Doesn’t look like you’ll need that to-go box,” she said.

Hat tip to Pam and Jen from The diner in Columbus. They let me sit for a bit after a couple dog chases and a surprise gravel road.

And Chad at the auto repair shop who set me up right by the big fan in the shop to cool off and have a cold bottle of water.

Saturday it is onto Illinois.

VIDEO | Shelby Forest General Store from 1934

0
Shelby, TN – A sign at the side of Hwy 388 heading north about 10 miles outside Memphis, TN read “Shelby Forest General Store  2-miles Established 1934.”

I debated for less than two seconds and thought this is what is so great about bicycle touring.

The Shelby Forest General Store had a worn wooden porch with a standard wooden bench out front for sitting, making high-minded decisions, and monitoring traffic.

Owners Doug and Kristin Ammons saved the store from being razed.

The story is told out front on a sign designed to resemble an historic marker as follows:
